A superb soundboard album of rare acoustic sessions is now available. The recording was made on April 8, 1997, in Cambridge, during a radio show recorded at WBCN's Fort Apache Studios. At the time, Bowie was in between the release of his ambitious new album "Earthlings" in February 1997 and the start of a full-scale tour in June 1997. During this period, Bowie was repeatedly exposed to various media to promote his new album. One of the most active was radio, where he and then-guitarist Reeves Gabrels appeared together to perform an acoustic performance. Of course, these radio shows became a standard soundboard and produced many masterpieces. This is one of them. And this is not the only soundboard of the day. The definitive album "SUCK ON THIS : BUDAPEST 1997" also includes a bonus acoustic session, but that was actually recorded on "April 8, 1997. That one is a radio show in Atlanta, which is about 2.5 hours by plane from Cambridge, the location of this film. Although it is unclear which came first, they were doing two sessions a day. This work is such that it is a sister in both content and quality. The two musicians will have a private session with a question and answer session in a broadcast studio with fans in the room. The sound is official-grade, but with a wonderful sense of closeness that only an acoustic can provide: their cutting is vivid to the point of nuance, and of course their singing voices are super direct. The sound is so vivid that you feel as if you are really in the studio with them, and the passion with which the band performs is also evident. The passionate performance is also very good. The selection is the same as the Atlanta broadcast, including "Seven Years In Tibet" and "Dead Man Walking" from "EARTHLING," plus "Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps)," "The Jean Genie," and "I Can't Read" (5 songs). (The same goes for singing "The Supermen" along with a joke about hooking up with Jimmy Page, but we'll cut this one short). Unplugged" is often austere and mature, but this session is the type that shines with jerky vigor. Moreover, this is not a casual session in which the electric guitar is replaced by an acoustic guitar, but rather a session in which the perfectionists have put a lot of thought into the arrangement. The country touch of "Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps)" is especially innovative, and Reeves' skill can be felt vividly because it is unplugged. Bowie's unplugged version itself is valuable, but it is even more so because it is so richly fragrant. This is another session from the same day, sister to the definitive "SUCK ON THIS (bonus track)" album. As a matter of fact, this Cambridge broadcast was also released on CD in NEW YORK MAN, but Bowie's acoustic session is both rare and too good to be true.
