In the early '90s, a revolution occurred in the extreme metal world. This was the birth of melodic death metal. The world of heavy metal became increasingly radical throughout the 1980s, with speed metal, thrash metal, and death metal/grindcore. However, in the 1990s, melody began to make a comeback in extreme metal with black metal and melodic death metal. The epicenter of such melodic death metal was Gothenburg, Sweden, where In Flames, along with At the Gates and Dark Tranquility, created the foundation for a new musical style. In particular, their second album ``The Jester Race'' (1996) is a monumental milestone in the history of melodic death metal. On the other hand, they have expanded their musicality beyond the melodic death metal world. By boldly incorporating influences from clean vocals and alternative rock, they succeeded in appealing to a wider range of fans. ``Clayman'' in 2000 became a masterpiece representing their post-melodeath era.
They are now releasing their first new album in four years, ``For Gone.'' As soon as the lead single from this album, their 14th album, was released, In Flames fans started to get excited. This is because it was a song that strongly felt like a return to the early melodic death metal era. In fact, ``For Gone'' is a work that has a strong scent of good old In Flames. Regarding this album, vocalist Anders Frieden says with confidence, ``We wanted to make a guitar-centered record. A combination of melody and aggression. That's the DNA of our music.''
