Striper was born from the LA metal movement of the 1980s. They established the Christian metal genre by combining gospel and intense metal sounds. Frontman Michael Sweet left the group in 1992, and the group disbanded after a performance in Switzerland in 1993. In 1999, all members except Robert came together to perform at an event in Puerto Rico, and in 2000 they all gathered together at the first STRYPER EXPO in New Jersey, and restarted in 2003. The band name Striper comes from the word "stripe" in Isaiah 53:5, but the band also uses the word "stripe" to indicate a striped pattern, and the band's logo and stage costumes also feature striped patterns. In support of their latest studio album, ``When We Were Kings,'' the band went on a world tour last year to celebrate their 40th anniversary. Stryper continues to evolve, with a dynamic set list that includes classic songs from the past, classic songs from the new era, costume changes, and upgraded stage production. As a cornerstone of Christian rock/metal, they have continued to fuse faith and heavy music for 40 years. With over 10 million albums sold worldwide and numerous Billboard Top 40 hits, Stryper continues to write, record and perform live, delivering music to fans around the world. Their musical style, known as Christian metal, is based on LA metal/glam metal, with catchy melodies and heavy guitar riffs. The lyrics consistently emphasize Christian messages (faith, salvation, hope). They were also known for their live performances in which they threw Bibles into the audience, and were considered the first truly successful band in the metal scene at the time to clearly convey a religious message.
