Sepultura can be said to be one of the most important bands not only in Brazil but also in the history of heavy metal around the world. Its history dates back to 1984. Early on, they developed a rough death/black metal sound that was heavily influenced by European extreme metal such as Venom, Celtic Frost, and Hellhammer. They gained a lot of attention in the underground scene with their 1985 EP Bestial Devastation, followed by their debut album Morbid Visions in 1986. After perfecting their sound with ``Schizophrenia'' in 1987, they finally made a worldwide breakthrough with ``Beneath The Remains'' in 1989. Furthermore, with ``Arise'' in 1991, they perfected a style that combined the aggression of thrash metal with the heaviness of death metal, and determined their worldwide popularity. With ``Chaos A.D.'' in 1993, they shifted to a heavier sound with an emphasis on groove. The following ``Roots'' in 1996 boldly introduced indigenous Brazilian music and percussion. This work, which influenced Korn and others, also had a great influence on the later nu metal movement, and is still talked about today as Sepultura's masterpiece.
In 1997, frontman Max Cavalera left the band. The survival of the band was in doubt, but they restarted as the new Sepultura with new vocalist Derrick Green. Since then, he has released ``Against'' (1998), ``Nation'' (2001), ``Roorback'' (2003), ``Dante XXI'' (2006), ``A-Lex'' (2009), ``Kairos'' (2011), and ``Machine. Messiah” (2017) and “Quadra” (2020), they have continued to release works that always maintain a spirit of change and experimentation. Despite changing members, Sepultura has never relied solely on its past heritage, pursuing new sounds with each era.
Now, their final work, ``The Cloud Of Unknowing'' EP, has been released here in Japan. This work consists of 4 songs, and although it is an EP, its content is very dense. The result is a condensed version of their 40-year history. Fierce aggression, heavy grooves, experimental spirit, and deep spirituality. All the elements that have defined the band Sepultura are packed into this record. It captures the intensity, intelligence, anger, sadness, and creativity of the band Sepultura.
The rebellion by Brazilian youth that began in 1984 eventually became a huge force that changed the metal scene around the world. And now, that story is coming to an end. However, the music and spirit that Sepultura left behind will never disappear. If you like metal, you have no choice but to listen to this EP.
