A representative soundtrack from the 1978 Backless Tour! Another superb live recording of Eric Clapton is now available. From the "Backless European Tour" on November 19, 1978 in Brussels, Belgium, this is a superb stereo audience recording with excellent sound balance and spaciousness. The pitch, which was slightly high on the master, has been corrected to normal and the noticeable hissing noise has been reduced. In addition, the left-leaning sound chain phase has been adjusted to the center of the sound as much as possible. Therefore, I think it can be said that this is an upgraded version that is easier to listen to. Now, let us review the topics of this European tour in terms of Clapton's activities during this year. February 1-April 19, 1978: U.S. tour ・June 23, 1978: Festival in Rotterdam, Holland with Bob Dylan's band ・July 1-July 15, 1978: Short European tour (including festival appearance with Bob Dylan) November 1, 1978: Release of the album "BACKLESS" ←★★★★ ・November 5 - December 7, 1978: European tour ←★★★★ ・December 11, 1978: Jumped in at Muddy Waters' concert at Dingwall, London. December 11, 1978: Jumped into Muddy Waters' concert in Dingwall, London. This was one of the shows during the European tour with the new album "BACKLESS", which was recorded by Glyn Johns, the same British producer, after the hit album "SLOWHAND" and released just two months after the album was finished. You can see that this was one of the first shows of the tour. It was an important tour that closed out the year and contributed greatly to the promotion of the album. The tour was the brainchild of Clapton, who, fed up with the usual air travel, decided to give a unique European twist to the tour by renting the famous Orient Express train to take him to all the stops. Clapton was also pleased to have his beloved bluesman Muddy Waters as the opening act. (This tour was scheduled to be filmed as a documentary at Clapton's request and released under the title "ERIC CLAPTON'S ROLLING HOTEL" at the time, but unfortunately, it has not been released to the public until now. (Unfortunately, it has not been released to the public until now.) One of the highlights of this tour was the fact that the second guitarist, George Terry, who was with the band when the album was recorded, was fired, and the tour was conducted with a four-piece band, the same formation as during the Derek & The Dominos days. The fact that Clapton was now the only guitarist in the band meant that his importance to the performance had increased. The fact that Clapton himself was willing to take on this responsibility, despite his ongoing alcoholism, made this tour a remarkable one. It was later discovered that the set list differed greatly between the early and later stages of the tour, which was also an attraction of this tour. As mentioned above, in the very beginning of the tour, many numbers from the album "BACKLESS" were played. From the midpoint of the tour, the number of songs from the album was reduced drastically, and it became more like a "regular tour" with old blues and repertoire from the previous tours. On this day, "BACKLESS" played four songs (If I Don't Be There By Morning, I'll Make Love To You Anytime, Tulsa Time, and Early In The Morning). The live version of "I'll Make Love To You Anytime" is a rare J.J. Cale cover that can only be heard on this tour. For fans of this album, which is highly regarded as a "hidden masterpiece," this is a soundtrack that they will not be able to resist. What was a fresh attempt was to open the album with Layla for the first time since 1975. Moreover, the backing chorus for Layla and all the other songs was performed by drummer Jamie Oldaker, who was surprisingly good at it. And on Layla, you can also hear a surprising arrangement in which that main phrase is played by Dick Sims on the organ. Thus, considering the final form of this tour, which ended in late November, and the previous five-piece tours, we can see that the contents were full of irregularities. The sound quality is outstanding as well as the preciousness of the recording. This tour was the only time that a four-piece band performed live during the period when the "Tulsa Tops" were used. The Tulsa Tops were all fired the following year when Clapton brought in another Englishman, Albert Lee, as second guitarist, but the laid-back groove after 1974 was something that only the Tulsa Tops could produce. Clapton's motivation to return to the same lineup as Derek and the Dominos was on full display on this tour. I highly recommend Clapton fans to listen to this recording. Disc:1 (46:43) 1.
