This album contains the "November 30, 1978: Nippon Budokan" show. This week, the newly discovered "BUDOKAN 1978 2ND NIGHT" from the same 1978 Japan tour will also appear, so let's check the show's position in the schedule of the time here as well. November 20: Ibaraki Prefecture Citizens Cultural Center, November 22: Ishikawa Kosei-Nenkin Kaikan, November 23: Kurashiki Civic Hall, November 24: Osaka Prefectural Gymnasium, November 26: "DEFINITIVE NAGOYA 1978," November 28: "CAT MOVES (Fukuoka)," November 29: "OSAKA 1978 2ND NIGHT", November 30: Nippon Budokan [this work] - December 1: Nippon Budokan "BUDOKAN 1978 2ND NIGHT", December 2: Nippon Budokan "IN SEARCH OF A SUN" *Only representative works on each day. Total of 10 performances. Jeff's first solo visit to Japan in 1975 was a bit turbulent due to his poor health, but three years later in 1978, the mood was renewed. Accompanied by Stanley Clarke, the scale of the tour expanded dramatically. The Japan tour showed off the band's true potential. The highlight of the tour was the 3-DAYS at Nippon Budokan at the end of the tour, and this is the first day of the tour. It was the first time in five years since the legendary BBA's first visit to Japan that they stepped on stage at the Nippon Budokan. This is an audience recording of such a show by the same person who recorded "BUDOKAN 1978 2nd Night" released at the same time, and it is also a superb recording. In fact, the core that flows out of this album is so thick that Jeff's guitar almost seems distant, even in the little phrases where he scratches the strings, and it comes right at you. The snare tone also bears the hallmarks of an audience recording, and if you listen carefully with headphones, you can hear a slight hall rumbling. It is definitely an audience recording, but even that ringing is not clouded or muddy, giving it luster and color without hiding any detail. And not to be outdone by the close contact guitar is Stanley's bass. The attack sound is also sharp, and the swells that create a rich groove are beautifully drawn. The power of the bass is so strong that it is almost as if you are listening to a radio broadcast (at that time). It is so close and so powerful that it becomes over-inputting in places. The "Freeway Jam" in the beginning, "Scatterbrain" in the second half, and the drum solo ....... Don't get me wrong, this is not (by any means) a bombastic or roaring recording. It is just that the sound is chattering and distorted in the very few moments when the PA spits out full volume. Of course, the sound has been made easy to listen to through precise mastering, but because the miraculous "BUDOKAN 1978 2ND NIGHT" was unearthed at the same time, it was just one step short of the original. However, it is definitely one of the most representative recordings of the day, and the show is also excellent. And the show is also wonderful. As I mentioned in the commentary of "BUDOKAN 1978 2ND NIGHT," the Japan tour in 1978 was getting better and better. Perhaps because of his passion for the first Nippon Budokan since BBA, Jeff played more carefully than at the regional shows, and his phrasing was exquisite with a slow and steady pace. The ending of "Superstition" was still not perfect, but that was only a detail. You can feel the final touches being put into the ensemble as they work toward perfection. In 1978, the solo guitarist showed his true colors during a visit to Japan with Stanley Clarke. BUDOKAN 1978 2ND NIGHT", which permanently preserves that night of perfection, is a must-hear, but this album is the eve of that event. This is a newly discovered sister work that allows us to enjoy the two consecutive performances that were performed by the same recording artist at the top of their game.
