More than 20 years have passed since the 1999 edition of the UK Babylon Tour, which even gives the impression of nostalgia. Although the tour was called the "Babylon Tour" because it was postponed one year due to tax issues, it was influenced by the "No Security Tour" that took place just before the Babylon Tour. Most of the dates of this tour have been released due to the small number of performances, but for the Sheffield show on June 6, VGP's "Beyond the Valley" is probably the only one that is well-known among enthusiasts. The audience recording of the Sheffield concert, which captured Keith's sound with too big a balance, had a great impact, and the sound image was attractive enough for enthusiasts, even if it was not for everyone. On the other hand, the sound quality was generally peculiar, with the sound leaning toward the mid-range, the main live performance leaning to the right and the B stage to the extreme left, and the crisp sound quality reflecting the year 2000, when the recordings were released. Although a staple of the mania, the Babylon UK tour itself was no longer mentioned as time went by, in 2023. We have obtained another recording of this date through our own route, not via the Internet. Since this is Sheffield 99, I initially thought it might be a non-equivalent version of the same source as "Beyond the Valley" (hereafter referred to as "the original recording"), but when I played it back, I found it to be a completely different recording. However, when I played it back, I found that it was a completely different recording. The sound image of Keith's sound was not as prominent as the original recording, and the entire performance was more balanced. The sound of Keith is still loud (laugh), and it is possible that the recording was made in an area close to that of the original recording. In any case, the balance of the music is clearly superior to the original recording. It is also clear that both the existing and the new recordings were recorded at the front of the venue, and the first half of the live show in particular shares the same point of picking up the excitement of the surroundings, but it is also less noisy than the existing recordings. For example, the opening song "Jumping Jack Flash" even had people singing, whereas this one is mainly filled with hand-clapping. And what can be said is the very clear and natural listening comfort of the sound source this time. Compared to the crispy sound quality typical of the early 2000s, the impression is suddenly much clearer. The fluctuation of the sound quality in the B stage is also clearly less. The balance and naturalness of the sound is better than the original recording, which is why another recording is now being released on a limited press CD. The balance of the recordings is so good that Keith's guitar is still prominent, and when you listen again to the dynamic performance in Sheffield more than 20 years ago, you will be enchanted to hear how much he was playing. The previously released recording had a tendency to have Keith's playing sound too loud and you could hear the rough edges of his playing, but when you listen to the new recording with its excellent balance, you can feel the coolness of his playing, which makes it sound fresh and new. When you think about it, this was the third year of the Babylon tour, and in addition, they were on the No Security tour, so it is not surprising that the vigorous performance and Keith's playing were so prominent here. The B stage is a reminder of the No Security Tour, with Keith's performance of "Route 66" in full force. Keith is again impressive, playing his best phrases on "Route 66. Surprisingly, "You Don't Have To Mean It," which has been played so infrequently on the Babylon tour that it has become a rarity in 1999, is also included on this disc. The new Sheffield audience recording is thus released with all the advantages of the original release. Please enjoy this new, well-balanced, and easy-to-hear recording of this great performance!
