The SANTANA recordings boast a special brilliance in the Absolutely Masterful Millard Collection. This new masterpiece is part of a trilogy with the highly acclaimed "COSTA MESA 1990" and "COSTA MESA 1991". The recording on this album is the Costa Mesa concert on September 3, 1989. This is a superb audience recording. As mentioned at the beginning of this article, we have already introduced Mike Millard's "COSTA MESA 1990" and "COSTA MESA 1991," and in fact, SANTANA series of three recordings, not two but three, recorded at the same venue "Pacific Amphitheater" for three consecutive years. The three sister productions were recorded at the same venue "Pacific Amphitheater" for three consecutive years. Let's take a look at the three productions in the following schedule. 1989 - January 20-February 25/April 14-29: North America #1 (8 performances), May 3-July 27: Europe #1 (47 performances), September 1-October 13: North America #2 (14 performances) ←★Coco★★★, November 26: Earthquake Relief Concert April 12-May 26, 1990: North America #3 (14 concerts) 《Launch of "SPIRITS DANCING IN THE FLESH" in June》・May 29-June 30: Europe #2 (26 concerts) ・July 13-November 21: North America #4 (68 concerts) ←*Costa Relief Concert January 19 + 24: Rock In Rio, April 27 - June 28: North America #5/Japan (21 concerts), July 7 - 27: Europe #3 (17 concerts), August 30 - November 3: North America #6 (19 concerts) ←*COSTA MESA 1991 This is the SANTANA concert of 1989-1990, and the Costa Mesa concert in this album was the third concert of the "North America #2" series. What is interesting is that all three Costa Mesa concerts were in September. For Millard, recording SANTANA in September may have been a regular event. This work, vacuum-packed with such scenes, is a superb product with a sound very similar to the previous two works. As those who experienced "COSTA MESA 1990" and "COSTA MESA 1991" will know, the "Pacific Amphitheater" is an amphitheater with a large fan-shaped opening. The Pacific Amphitheater is a large fan-shaped amphitheater with no ceiling or walls to reflect sound, making it easy to record the sound directly from the PA's output with a very thick sound. Of course, the absolute virtuoso Millard would not miss the advantages of such an open venue. As with the first two albums, the direct sound is used to its fullest extent. Another thing that is common to the previous two albums is the passion of the loud cheers. Of course, the extremely thick and dense sound of the performance does not give up its leading role, but it also honestly absorbs the heat of the audience's delight in the Latin beats. This is probably due to the fact that in addition to the same venue, they were also recorded in the same "September". Probably, there must be many fans who have attended all three shows and closed the end of summer with SANTANA's melancholy guitar. Such a sense of openness, similar to that of a summer festival, also pervades the three sisters' works. The sound and mood of the three sisters are very similar, but what is completely different is the content of the show itself. As you can see from the schedule above, the previous two albums were after the release of "SPIRITS DANCING IN THE FLESH," but this one was before the release of "SPIRITS DANCING IN THE FLESH. The sets are also quite different. Since comparisons would be full of "*" marks, let's sort them out straight here: 60s/70s - Santana: Savor/Soul Sacrifice/ Guardian God of Heaven: Black Magic Woman-Gypsy Queen/Oye Como Va - Santana III: Batuka/No One To Go Batuka/No One To Depend On/Everybody's Everything/Toussaint L'Ouverture/Others: Europa (Earth's Cry, Heaven's Smile)/Marbles 80's and after/Blues For Salvador Bella/Blues For Salvador/Deeper, Dig Deeper/Spirits Dancing: Angels All Around Us-Spirits Dancing In The Flesh/It's A Jungle Out There/Soweto (Africa) Other: Love Theme from 'Spartacus'/Super Boogie/For Those Who Chant/Get Uppa/Smooth Criminal/Heavy Metal It is very rare to have three consecutive years of recording at the same venue once a year. For fans of both SANTANA and Millard, this is a must-see for the three beautiful sisters. This is a superb audience recording of the September 3, 1989 Costa Mesa concert. This is the same venue as "COSTA MESA 1990" and "COSTA MESA 1991," and the sound is very similar. The sound is very similar to that of the "COSTA MESA 1990" and "COSTA MESA 1991" trilogy.
