Rare recordings of Cream 1968 are currently popping up on YouTube, setting the world's enthusiasts ablaze, and in fact, a rare audience recording of the band on stage at the Fillmore is being released simultaneously. The person who released these recordings is as familiar with the Who as he is with Cream. As if to confirm this, he has also released a rare live recording of their first public performance at the Fillmore West in 1969. The Who, having completed their rare masterpiece "TOMMY," performed the album in its entirety on stage in a groundbreaking show that overturned the conventional rock concert formula. From there, the Who went on to produce some of the career-high performances of their career, including Woodstock through 1969. Despite their energetic live performances, there are surprisingly few recordings of the band on stage in 1969. While it is true that there are soundboard recordings of key moments such as Woodstock, Stockholm, and the London Coliseum, they are not enough in terms of the number of live shows they performed that year. Especially before Woodstock, the number of sound sources and items is drastically reduced. The famous "tape burning" incident put an end to this situation. The band had recorded several multi-tracks of the first half of 1969, but when it came time to make something out of them, Pete, in a tantrum over the fact that Rhody had not examined each recording, ordered them to burn the tapes... and they did. When Rowdy was so upset that Rowdy had not examined each recording, Pete ordered him to burn the tapes. In addition, Pete clearly stated in his autobiography that the burned tapes included a series of performances at the Fillmore... and it has been confirmed that no soundboard recordings of the band on stage prior to Woodstock exist. It was a time when the Who were working hard to promote their new album "TOMMY," and the absence of official recordings from that period was a blow to the band. Under such circumstances, the Fillmore West recording of June 19 was much appreciated by enthusiasts. The quality of the recording was surprisingly easy to listen to for an audience recording at the time, and many enthusiasts may have listened to the classic paper jacket release "FLYING TO NEW YORK TO GO TO COURT". However, the newly released show was the one on the 18th, the day before the show. In fact, a distant audience recording of the 18th show has been available for a long time, and it can be easily found online. However, the setlist and sound source of the new recording are completely different from the previous one, and the person who released the new recording told us that the previous recording was actually made on the 17th, and this one is the genuine 18th, along with an image of the tape box. Furthermore, the recordings were made from each of the two shows, which also confirms Pete's statement in his autobiography that Bill Graham forced him to perform twice a day at the Fillmore West, causing an argument, and that he cut the first show short, which caused further controversy. The result. The first half of this recording shows the early part of the first show, where Pete skipped the usual "I Can't Explain" and started "Fortune Teller," proving that the autobiography is true. The result was also a proof that it was exactly as it was in his autobiography. However, since the performance of "TOMMY" was longer than usual, the Who wanted to have one performance per day. As a compromise, we decided to have one stage per day from the last day. It can be said that this is literally a historical sound source that demonstrates such a situation. What is even more astonishing is the quality of the sound. The following day's "FLYING TO NEW YORK TO GO TO COURT" was also very easy to listen to for an audience in 1969, but it is by far easier to listen to than that. While the sound image of that disc was close, John's bass was weak, and the overall sound quality was also rough. On the other hand, this recording captures not only John's bass but also Roger's singing voice and the entire performance in perfect balance. Above all, John's bass is not saturated, yet it is clearly captured. This alone makes it superior to "FLYING TO~" by a small margin. Many of the audience recordings of the Who from this era are vintage audios that are either "roaring" or "distant sound image" that are afraid of the loudness, but I never thought that there was a super valuable source that captured the stage before Woodstock in such a splendid recording condition in 1969. I had no idea it was there. In the age of psychedelic music, it is not surprising that there were people in the audience who freaked out around the band. However, there were none of them, and they were all listening to "TOMMY," which had just been released, and this contributed greatly to the ease of listening. The sound quality is so good that the rough performance of "TOMMY," which had just been put on stage, can be felt vividly. Compared to the performance at Woodstock, which had reached the stage of perfection, the awkwardness of the flow of the song can be seen, which makes the initial atmosphere of the performance and the "TOMMY" part, in which the band tries to overpower the audience by force, sound even fresher. The finale, "Magic Bus," closes with a development that foreshadows Woodstock. An audience recording from 1969? Fillmore West, San Francisco, CA, USA 18th June 1969 Disc 1 (34:41) First set: 1.
